In Kerala, drug addiction among the teenagers is raising up in a disturbing rate. With this scenario, Sargakshetra had initiated an all Kerala awareness program against drug use. The awareness campaign was named as SAY NO TODRUGS. More than 100 schools and colleges and around two lakh students were addressed from this campaign. The major activities under this project are as follows:
As a part of the drug free campaign Sargakshetra organized training programs for the volunteers as well as the trainers who actively participated in the awareness campaigns. Training programs were organized at KE College Mannanam, SB College Changanacherry, Fr. Porukkkara College Champakkulam and Amal Jyothi Engineering College Kanjirappally. The NSS volunteers, MSW students and interested students from various other departments participated from each college.
All Kerala awareness campaign was taken to next level with the association of MG universities NSS units. The annual camps of NSS were included with awareness programs. Drugs and Cancer were the discussed topics during the camps.
Awareness programs including street plays, drug free poster exhibitions, awareness classes and so on were conducted at different village and municipal areas. The intention in organizing these events was to give a consciousness to the public and to make them aware about the effects of the drugs.
The awareness programs conducted at the panchayaths, municipal areas and colleges were included with street play presented by the MSW students of SB College. The theme of the play was about the changing trend among the youth towards drug and the related issues.
The drug free campaign was started with flash mobs presented by the MSW students of SB College Changanacherry. Various locations chosen for the event included Perunna Bus station, Changanacherry market, Mathomoola, KurichiOutpost, Mandiram Kavala, Thengana Junction, Madappalli Panchayath, Naalukodi junction, Payipad junction, etc. The program covered these areas in2 days. The 2 days campaign helped to pass the awareness among 1500 populace.
Exhibitions were organized in different locations of the Changanacherry Municipality, Kurichi Panchayath, Madappaaly panchayath and Payippad panchayath. Boards and pluck cards with Anti-drug messages were exhibited; street plays and flash mobs were also arranged in these places.
A pamphlet containing the details regarding drugs and their causative side effects were distributed during the programs. The pamphlet helped to provide all the first-hand information of drug addiction, as well as information about the de-addiction canters which provide the best service for addiction treatment in the state of Kerala.
Sargakshetra organized a Kerala yatra from Kasargod to Thiruvananthapuram for the awareness of cancer and drug. The program was inaugurated by Hon. Minister Mr. E. Chandrasekaran in Pauis X College, Rajapuram. The journey took 15 days and covered all the districts of Kerala with at least 5 programs in a district. The yatra received a warm welcome in all the places and political, cultural and religious leaders participated with the yatra in different places. The yatra went along with various programs including signature campaigns, Flash mobs, Street plays, Awareness classes, painting against drugs and cancer, cultural programs, rallies, etc.
